For Shaftsbury, Pownal and Stamford residents

NOTE:  Current transfer station permits for Shaftsbury, Pownal or Stamford are needed to use this free service.

WHAT TO BRING:  Most substances with labels that say CAUSTIC, TOXIC, CORROSIVE, POISON, FLAMMABLE, DANGER, WARNING OR CAUTION.

From the Workbench:

Oil based stains & Varnishes
Wood preservatives
Paint strippers & thinners
Solvent adhesives
Lighter fluid

Rechargable batteries (see Note 1)
From the House:

Rubber cement/airplane glue
Fiberglass resins
Photo chemicals
Chemistry sets
Furniture polish
Floor/metal polish
Oven cleaner
Drain/toilet cleaner
Spot remover
Rug/upholstery cleaner
Hobby supplies/art supplies
Fluorescent fixture/bulbs

HOW CAN I SAFELY TRANSPORT
THESE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS???


Leave material in original containers.
Tighten caps and lids.
Sort and pack separately:
   oil paint, pesticides and household cleaners
Pack containers in sturdy upright
   boxes and pad with newspaper.
NEVER MIX CHEMICALS
Pack your car and drive directly to the site.
NEVER SMOKE while handling hazardous material

 NOTES:

  1. Shaftsbury residents may dispose of rechargable batteries at the Transfer Station whenever it is open. 
    On hazardous waste days Pownal and Stamford residents may use the Shaftsbury disposal system.

    (Rechargable batteries are recycled through a free service provided by the Rechargable Battery Recycling Corporation, and are therefore not accepted as hazardous waste.)
     
  2. Latex paint is not hazardous waste. To dispose of latex paiint, mix it with kitty litter, let it dry, and dispose of it as normal trash.
     
  3. Shaftsbury residents may dispose of up to five gallons of motor oil per week.  Only non-commercial use of this service is allowed.
