1. Sales of cemetery
burial plots are limited to natives, residents or landowners of Shaftsbury
unless otherwise approved by majority vote of Board of Selectmen.
2. All cemetery plot pricing and sales
are to include the following:
a. The lot sale price (endowment care
included)
b. The price for corner markers set in place
c. The fees for handling, service of
sale, preparing and recording the deed with the Town Clerk
d. Endowment care (perpetual care) is
included with ALL SALES
3. An itemized receipt will be given the
buyer of a plot at the close of a sale but no deed will be delivered until lot
corner markers are in place.
4. All monies owed for plot purchases,
fees, or other cemetery-related services must be paid in full before any
remains will be accepted for burial in such indebted plot. All disbursements
will be made only by written order of the cemetery authority.
5. Shaftsbury's cemetery plot prices and
prices for other cemetery services are established, placed in effect, and
subject to change by the cemetery authority.
6. Interment in Shaftsbury's cemeteries
is limited to human remains.
7. An outside receptacle, in addition to
the casket, is required for burials and the receptacle shall be fabricated of
sufficiently rigid materials so as to resist collapse caused by weight of the
earth, moisture, snow, grave markers, and cemetery maintenance equipment. The
materials of which such vaults or containers are fabricated will be left to the
good sense and sound judgment of the funeral directors and other persons of
concern.
8. A reward of two hundred fifty ($250)
dollars is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any
person or persons guilty of damaging any cemetery property.
9. All placements of cemetery memorials
and headstones are to be first approved by the Cemetery Superintendent. When
the foundation holes are dug the correct depth, being a minimum of three feet,
the Cemetery Superintendent will issue final approval prior to filling with
cement. (for the installation of a monument over three feet, the base will be
four feet.) As a result of the time required of the Cemetery Superintendent, a
$20 fee will be charged.
10. Grave lot dimensions will be 4 1/2
feet X 9 feet.
11. Burials between November 1 and April
1 are permitted.
a. Any additional expense of snow removal
in clearing driveways walkways, or thawing ground for a burial, is the
responsibility of the deceased's family.
b. Winter burials because of inclement
weather, are at the discretion of the Cemetery Superintendent.
12. All cemetery activity, other than
visits or placement of decorations, must first be cleared and approved by the
Cemetery Superintendent.
13. All vehicles must stay within
designated roadways. No equipment of any kind associated with grave opening or
closing will be permitted in the vicinity, or in view, while any burial or
memorial services are in progress.
14. Burial of cremated remains requires
the purchase of a regular gravesite. A gravesite may contain the ashes of up to
four persons.
15. No lot will be resold except to the
Town of Shaftsbury at the rate it was originally purchased, less fees.
** A copy
of these Bylaws will be issued to each lot purchaser who will have the
responsibility of reading and adhering to all the bylaws.

Maximum size of a plot is eight spaces. Curb-side lots, if available, are 15% additional to the cost of grave space.
BURIAL CHARGES are the same for all town cemeteries:
All lot sale money should be paid by check and made payable
to 'the Town of Shaftsbury Cemetery Account.
