The Shaftsbury Water Board/Selectboard urges all citizens, especially South Shaftsbury water users, to attend a public information meeting Monday November 3rd, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Shaftsbury Elementary School to discuss a bond vote to fund State mandated improvements to the Shaftsbury Water System.

The Shaftsbury Water System does not comply with current State Water Supply Rules. While the Water System may have complied when it was built, the State Water Supply Division has changed and modernized it regulations. For example, the Shaftsbury Water System consists of 6-inch, 4-inch and smaller water mains which, in many locations, do not provide water flows or water pressure meeting State standards. These water mains do not meet State standards. Some of the State standards were adopted to assure adequate water flows and water pressure at fire hydrants. The State requires Shaftsbury's Water System to meet State standards.

The Shaftsbury Water Board obtained an engineering study of the Water System from Otter Creek Engineering. The State paid for the study. The engineering study outlines several water main improvements which will bring the system into compliance with State regulations. Our engineers recommended improvements that will help Shaftsbury meet State standards without incurring undue costs. The engineer estimates it will cost about $425,000 to complete the Water System improvement project.

To fund the project, the Shaftsbury Water Board will need a loan from the State. The loan will be funded by a bond, administered through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. The State has recently approved the Shaftsbury water system for a 20-year, low cost loan. In order to obtain the loan, the Town of Shaftsbury must conduct a bond vote and obtain the approval of the voters. This will be a town-wide vote.

On Monday November 3rd, 2008 a public informational meeting, where an engineer from Otter Creek Engineering will be present to present discuss the Water System Study, describe the needed improvements and the explain the estimated cost of the project. Our Water Superintendent, Joe Herrmann, will be present to answer questions. We look forward to your presence and participation on Monday November 3rd, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Shaftsbury Elementary School.

Voting Day will be Tuesday November 4th, 2008 between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM at Fire Station #1, at 166 Buck Hill Road, Shaftsbury, VT 05262.
