Shaftsbury Landfill Rules

The Town of Shaftsbury enjoys the privilege of being one of only three towns in Vermont with an operating unlined landfill.  In order to preserve local control of our solid waste management for as long as possible, the following rules must be respected and followed.  We appreciate your cooperation.

Recycling is mandatory when using the Shaftsbury Landfill, and penalties are imposed for violations.  Residents and businesses must dispose of all recyclables according to the instructions provided in the recycling handout.  Attendants are on duty to offer and provide assistance.  recycling link

Hazardous waste cannot be placed in the landfill, and must be disposed of during biannual collection events (announced beforehand).  At these events we collect “button” or “watch” batteries, thermometers, paint, solvents, anti-freeze, insecticides, aerosols, all mercury containing products, etc. No radiological, pharmaceutical or biomedical waste will be accepted on the hazardous waste day or at the landfill.  Call the Town office for information about where to dispose of this type of waste.

Compost material, including leaves, grass, brush up to 6 inches in diameter and other yard waste, may be deposited free of charge.  Residents are welcome to take home the compost.
