Carpenter House on West Mountain Road

Carpenter house on West Mountain Road

The Carpenter House (c. 1765) on West Mountain Road is the oldest homestead in Shaftsbury.  This farm was the subject of a test case in court in Albany, New York, brought by Ethan Allen during the New York-Hampshire Grants dispute.  Allen lost the case and returned home to organize the Green Mountain Boys to defend Vermonters from the claims of Yorkers.  Restored by Ogden and Ann Knapp.
