COMMITTEE MISSION & BACKGROUND

In 2003, the Shaftsbury Economic Development Committee completed the "South Shaftsbury Economic Revitalization Plan." This plan is the result of funding from a Municipal Planning Grant from the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development and the Town of Shaftsbury, as well as a partnership with the Bennington County Regional Commission (BCRC).

This study outlined six strategies resulted from a comprehensive look at the Bennington County economy, South Shaftsbury strength's and weaknesses, the community's vision and goals, and the region's strategic industries. These six strategies are:

1. Provide sewer service to two Shaftsbury growth centers;

2. Develop a Growth Center strategy;

3. Develop a recreational and cultural trail;

4. Capitalize on the railroad;

5. Work to nurture medically-oriented industries serving the elderly; and

6. Create, enhance and protect business relationships between Shaftsbury industries and the state and regional growth industries.

Each of these strategies has an implementation plan and a committee member assigned to seeing the strategy through to completion. Our work for the foreseeable future will be keeping forward progress on each of these strategies and reporting that progress on a regular basis to the community through the Selectboard.
